Take Notes: There Will Be A Test · 1758 days ago

For my second MonkeyFilter CD, I was going to, like the first time around, make an all-Canuck mix. Unfortunately, I left it a little too late and ended up just throwing together a bunch of rocking tracks.

It ended up being about half Canadian groups, and the remaining half split between American and British bands. Maybe next time. Here’s what I ended up using:

01. “We R In Need Of A Musical ReVoLuTIoN” by Esthero (Wikked Lil’ Grrrls, 2005)
02. “Emergency” by Femme Generation (Circle Gets The Square, 2004)
03. “Luno” by Bloc Party (Silent Alarm, 2005)
04. “All Nite Disco Party” by Brakes (Give Blood, 2005)
05. “El Manana” by Gorillaz (Demon Days, 2005)
06. “Memorize The City” by The Organ (Grab That Gun, 2004)
07. “Modern Way” by Kaiser Chiefs (Employment, 2005)
08. “Their Party Days” by Magneta Lane (The Constant Lover, 2004)
09. “Metal Heart” by Garbage (Bleed Like Me, 2005)
10. “Soft Revolution” by Stars (Set Yourself On Fire, 2004)
11. “Junior Kickstart” by The Go! Team (Thunder, Lightning, Strike, 2004)
12. “Magnetic Strip” by Controller.Controller (X-Amounts, 2005)
13. “Monster Hospital” by Metric (Live It Out, 2005)
14. “Warning Shots” by Thievery Corporation (The Cosmic Game, 2005)
15. “Reason Is Treason (Bonus)” by Kasbian (Kasabian, 2004)
16. “Love & Death” by The Stills (Logic Will Break Your Heart, 2003)
17. “Alive” by VHS Or Beta (Night On Fire, 2004)
18. “Last Broadcast” by Doves (The Last Broadcast, 2002)

Since I still had five of those cheap-ass cases from the last time, I again didn’t go with any cover art, just the CD design. The last time around, the monkeys said they were having problems reading my included .txt text listing, so I figured I’d give that a second try before abandoning it. I don’t think it was Toast screwing anything up when I burned the disc, probably just those wacky Kanji characters.

The artwork for this one is probably the least pretty inspired of the ones I’ve made. It’s just a WWII propaganda poster I found on the net somewhere with an orange cloud multiplier layer because this time, instead of group numbers, we were group Orange. (By the way, let me tell you that two orange covers in a row isn’t rocking my world or my ink cartridge). Throw in a Photoshop filter, the same MoFi logo I used the last time and some curved text, and there you go: one MoFi CD Swap label.

Memory Dump: iTunes tags · 1758 days ago

I’ve mentioned previously that I had been thinking of using the comments field to tag all my music. While I still haven’t rated and tagged everything since my iPod originally failed, I’ve done enough that it’s starting to get hard to remember all of the tags I’ve put in already.

Here are the tags I use in iTunes to make Smart Playlists smarter:

* cover: for example, “Beatles cover”
acoustic
African
asian: mostly Japanese hip-hop
Canadian
cdx [mofi cdx]: songs I’ve used or gotten from CD swaps; subset: MonkeyFilter CD swaps
drum and bass
electrojazz
featuring *: any kind of non-remix collaboration
instrumental: no song lyrics
itms: songs bought from the iTunes Music Store; + indicates a DRM-free iTunes Plus track
latin: mostly Brazilian beats
live
Ninja Tune: from the Ninja Tune label
remix
rerip (*): songs that need to be reripped from the source for various reasons
ripped: stuff that I either downloaded from somewhere or needs to be reripped again for some reason
six Degrees: from the Six Degrees label
soundtrack
sotw: the free song of the week from the iTunes Music Store
triphop

And for TV and movies:

British
based on a comic book
chapter titles: need to be fixed
music video
video

Monkey Revolution · 1904 days ago

booklet

One of the reasons I joined MonkeyFilter was so that I could comment in reply to MetaFilter-esque stories and links without having to go through all the rigamarole associated with a MeFi account. The other was because I wanted to be a part of their CD swap. This is my MoFi album.

I was originally going to make an all-Canadian mix but I was placed in a group of three other Canucks, which sort of defeated to point of introducing Canadiana to the masses. Instead, I went with an all Asian mix: a little bit of Japanese hip hop and a little bit of Cantopop.

01. “We“re Going To Make History Today” by Kevin Conway
02. “Another World” by Gackt (Another World, 2001)
03. “Truth” by Rhymester (???? And The Band Played On, 2002)
04. “Dream And Desire” by Bean Bag (??
, 2004)
05. “Amai Wana (Paint It Black)” by Utada Hikaru (First Love, 1999)
06. “Love Revolution 21” by Morning Musume (???????? 21, 2000)
07. “Fire & Ice” by Mic Banditz (The Visitorz, 2002)
08. “Superconductivity” by Nigo ((B)ape Sounds, 2004)
09. “Deep Impact” by Dragon Ash (Lily Of Da Valley, 2001)
10. “
“ by Acidman (?, 2002)
11. “???” by Bump Of Chicken (Jupiter, 2002)
12. “Only Holy Story” by Steady & Co. (Chambers, 2001)
13. “1000 20th Century Chairs” by Kahimi Karie (K.K.K.K.K., 2002)
14. “?????
“ by G.K. Maryan (Keep On Movin’ 2, 2002)
15. “Northern Lights” by Heaven (Music For Beautiful Modern Life Edited 4: A New Basic, 2002)
16. “Neverland” by Love Psychedelico ? (Love Psychedelico ?, 2004)

Instead of a traditional jewel case, I bought these CD cases that are marginally bigger than the CD itself. This meant that there were no liner notes, just a .txt file I included when I burned the discs. I figured that most everyone would just rip the CD and toss the case somewhere and forget about it, so what was the point in designing a cover? The only time you’d even see the CD would be if you took it into your car, and the people I know that do that usually have a big CD binder with no room for the tracklists. Even still, it felt odd sending them out without proper liner notes. I think I’ll go back to including them for the next time.
